The guys over at iSuppli have taken apart a T-Mobile G1 handset and calculated the “Bill of Materials” (BOM) cost and the figure is surprising.  For a shade under $144, you can build your own G1 device.  That is of course, providing you have the same bulk purchase discounts and know-how.

Total ticket of $143.89

Take a look at what goes into making the first Android handset:

  1. Baseband - $28.49
  2. Display - $19.67
  3. Camera - $12.13
  4. RF Power Amp - $9.84
  5. All the other stuff - $73.76
So after T-Mobile gets you for $180 on a 2-year contract, do you still feel like it’s a good deal?  What about those of you looking to get one at full price?  How does this figure make you feel?  Factoring in research, development, and other intangibles (edit) , is the G1 truly worth $400 to you?
