App Review: Quickoffice

Posted by Androidster on Wednesday, February 25, 2009, In : Apps

Quickoffice

For $7.99, QuickOffice is definitely worth it.

It's worth the money just to be able to save .doc, .xls, and .txt files from GMail to the SD card, which it does. I have a few e-mails in my inbox with attachments, which I kept in hopes of saving to the SD card someday. Now I can do just that!

Pros:
  • Can save .doc, .xls, and .txt to SD card, which could not be done before.
  • Can view .doc, .xls, and .txt files.
  • Can edit file names.
Cons:
  • Can't choose which folder to sav...

App Review: TeleNav GPS Navigator (officially launched today)

Posted by Androidster on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, In : Apps
Best Android App So Far (true story).
Free trial: http://ota.telenav.com/ota/tm

I dont' have a navigation system in my car, however I don't think I will ever need one, TeleNav GPS Navigator gives me everything I was expecting it to be, plus more.  There’s a lot of hype around a coming Garmin/Asus phone and rightfully so.  If it ends up anything like this experience, there will be plenty of happy folks out there.

When you first open TeleNav GPS Navigator, you’re given four options: Drive T...

Accessory Review: Seidio Innocase Surface Case for G1

Posted by Androidster on Monday, February 23, 2009, In : Accessories

Seidio Innocase G1 Case

The holder is designed very well from top to bottom.  It was a pleasant surprise when we went to pick up the box and it was heavier than we had hoped it would be.  The bottom is very dense and the “beans” used were heavy enough to keep the holder in place.  We haven’t even had to use the optional loop hook, which can be adhered to the dash for a more secure grip.

The G1 fits in the holder like it was designed specifically for it.  There’s a nice foam padding that surround...

App Review: Air Hockey

Air Hockey on Android

Air Hockey is a timeless American pastime, right up there with stickball and freeze tag. JJC Games has managed to port that classic table hockey experience to Android in its new game Air Hockey.

Like its non-virtual counterpart, Air Hockey is all about angles and reflexes. In order to succeed, gamers have to develop an eagle eye for spotting when their opponent has opened himself up for a goal. A split second recognition of a favorable angle can lead to a flick of the thumb and a...

App Review: Google My Tracks

Posted by Androidster on Wednesday, February 18, 2009, In : Apps
When you first launch My Tracks, you will be greeted with a world map as your phone acquires a GPS fix. One press of the menu brings up the available options and with a tap of the thumb you can begin recording information.  As you begin to move, an orange arrow will show your direction while a red tail shows the path.  The display seems to keep the entire path visible on the screen while you are recording, but you have the option to move around the map by dragging it.

Tap on the screen and yo...

App Review: WeatherBug

Posted by Androidster on Wednesday, February 18, 2009, In : Apps

The best feature of the app is the notification service. Once a location is set (either by the user’s current position or manually choosing), the current temperature is displayed in the notification bar. If you drag down the notification bar the current temperature and forecast are both displayed. There is no need to open the app; the data refreshes periodically. Best of all, there was no noticeable hit on battery life from this service. This feature sets a new standard for weather apps bec...

App Review: Tunewiki

Posted by Androidster on Sunday, February 15, 2009, In : Apps

TuneWiki is a music app for the Android platform. This app is the perfect replacement for the default music player that comes with the Android interface. This app not only allows you to handle all of your music, it also enhances the entire experience.

There are a few big parts to TuneWiki. First off, you can listen to all the music you store on your Android phone. You can view that music based on Artists, Album, Song, or Playlists you've created. When you start playing a song, yo...

App Review: Movie Finder

Posted by Androidster on Friday, February 13, 2009, In : Apps
This app has a lot of nice features. Once Movie Finder locates you, it suggests the various theaters in your area to you and shows distance to each, in kilometers. When you are in your home area, it’s no big deal. You probably know how far it is to get to your theaters. If you are traveling and want to take in a movie, just use the ballpark estimate of 1mi to .6 km and you’ll be alright. Would it be nice to have distance in miles? Yes. Is it a deal breaker? Nope.

Users will find a prett...

App Review: Google Scoreboard

Posted by Androidster on Thursday, February 12, 2009, In : Apps

Want to track your favorite team? This is the app for you! Upon opening the app for the first time, you’re greeted with tiles for the major sports of NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL, NCAAF, NCAAB, WNBA, and CFL.  In addition to all of these, you also have a Favs icon.

It’s possible to handpick your favorite teams from each sport and group them together in one convenient location.  It’s now possible for me to check the FLORIDA GATORS (NATIONAL CHAMPS!) and Miami Heat in one spot.  You ca...

App Review: Coloroid

g1_coloroid.png

This little game of color matching can take you by surprise.  What seems like a very basic, dull looking game at first starts to draw you in within minutes.  I couldn’t start another app on my G1 until I cleared it.  Although it only took me a handful of times to finish the game, I imagined myself coming back to this one down the road, if only to beat my own record.

One of the things I was disappointed by when I first downloaded the game was the limited number of levels to play.  Fortunate...

App Review: Pocket Auctions for eBay

Posted by Androidster on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, In : Apps

I downloaded Bonfire Media’s “Pocket Auctions for eBay” night and instantly fell in love with it.  Upon opening it up, I’m greeted with options like Deals, My eBay, and Scan.  Each of these features would make a half decent eBay application on its own, but when combined in one program, it adds up to one of the best Android titles yet.  It’s no surprise when you read the “About” information, you’d see that they are a member of the eBay developers program and have won awards for...

App Review: Shazam

Posted by Androidster on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, In : Apps
You can finally learn the name of the song playing every 40 minutes on the loop at work, or playing in the car every 10 minutes! When we first opened Shazam we had two options, “Tag Now” and “My Tags”. It is a very simple but effective design.

The first option, “Tag Now” takes you to the listening part, it immediately starts listening for about 20 seconds then it analyzes the clip of music and tries to find a match. We found that it is very important to have a clear sound to analy...

App Review: imeem Mobile

Posted by Androidster on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, In : Apps
Finding new music and old favorites is a breeze with imeem. The design and layout of this application were very easy to navigate.  Everything felt intuitive and we were able to get around with no problems.  I started out by creating a new user account and found that a short and sweet process with no hiccups.  Once logged in, I was greeted with options to listen to Spotlight (new and notable artists) or Top 100 (hottest songs on imeem).  I tried both out and found a few artists I knew as well ...

App Review: Tippobillosplitamus

Clean, easy to navigate interface makes it stand out from all the other bill splitting and tip calculator applications out there.

Google may have recently killed off a few projects these last couple of weeks, but they’re still unveiling innovative, new ones all the time. They've done it again the announcement of Latitude, the location broadcasting service that combines Google Maps with GPS and cell phone triangulation.

Book Review: T-Mobile G1 for Dummies

T-Mobile G1 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech))

Everyone knows the Dummies books. They’ve been around for years now and chances are good you’ve paged through one at least once. I received a copy of T-Mobile G1 for Dummies last week for review. I have to admit that I was a little skeptical as to what I might find in the book, assuming I would know pretty much everything in it. I was wrong. The books has a lot of good info.
I found in the book very well written with an easy-to-digest style. Chris Ziegler (author, from Engad...

App Review: SMS Popup

Posted by Androidster on Tuesday, February 10, 2009, In : Apps

SMS Popup is a great app that doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Its not on any of those “must have” lists that other sites and magazines put together and we can’t figure out why. It’s loaded with features that enhance your messaging options and looks better than the Google stuff that comes loaded with Android.

It can be frustrating to have to keep checking your phone...
