Good news for owners of the Asus Transformer Pad Prime (TF201) or Transformer Pad Infinity (TF700) tablets. Asus Technical Marketing Manager, Gary Key, for whatever reason decided to use the XDA forums to announce that these two tablets will receive the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean treatment.
Both of them will receive an over-the-air update within the next 72 hours to download and install the update. Jelly Bean is the latest version of Google’s Android operating system and it focuses on small improvements across the board as well as speeding the OS up. Apps like the browser, calendar, and People utilize the better performance especially for graphics to help reduce some lag found in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. There’s also new features like offline voice typing, face unlock, and notifications that pull content and functions from the app right into the panel.
If you have the Prime of Infinity, charge it up and get ready for the imminent OTA software update.

Every so often, we come across a project on Kickstarter that gets us excited. Today, I was tipped to check out Jorno, a Bluetooth keyboard that folds up so that it fits in your palm for easy portability. For writers, enterprise users, and students, a keyboard is an essential accessory for a tablet or smartphone, as cranking out long form articles, taking notes, or editing office documents really doesn’t lend itself well to on-screen keyboards. The Jorno’s built-in stand props up your phone or tablet to turn you into a functional workhorse, and detaches from the keyboard itself should you want a little more distance between you and your tablet or smartphone.
Jorno doesn’t come cheap, however, and will retail for around $120 when the device goes on sale in April 2013. Early backers can still pick up a Jorno for as little as $89, however, so if you’re interested in Jorno, head over to the Kickstarter page to learn more or preorder the device for yourself.

Google has announced this morning that the Google Play Store has achieved a massive 25 billion apps downloaded since the service launched in 2008. Google Play is now home to some 675,000 apps and games, and has added tons of music, movie, and TV show content to its fold in the past year or two. To celebrate the 25 billion apps milestone, Google will discount several top paid applications to $0.25 over the next 5 days, and will compile special collections of 25 “must haves” at discounted prices. Examples of the 25 must have collections include 25 movies you must own, 25 banned books, and 25 albums that changed the world.
Customers interested in the discounted apps, movies, books, and music should check out Google Play starting later today, and continue to keep an eye on the store through the end of the month.

RIM showed off Blackberry 10 yesterday to a press hungry for the day the company becomes relevant again. The platform won’t release to the public until 2013, though the software is nearly completion as RIM prepares for carrier testing. There was a lot to like about Blackberry 10 from CEO Thorsten Heins’ keynote, from the demo of Peek, to the BlackBerry Hub and the updated BBM messenger service, but I can’t help but feel underwhelmed with RIMs offering, that it simply won’t and can’t compete in a market that left it behind years ago.
I wake up today much more excited by Windows Phone 8, and the promise and simplicity it brings to the table. The handsets are fresh, colorful, and offer a different feel than the boring black or white slabs we’ve grown accustomed to, while its clear RIM doesn’t want to rock the boat too much with Blackberry. Sure, the BlackBerry Dev Alpha devices won’t be released to the general public, but the latest model released yesterday is likely modeled after the first touch-only Blackberry 10 device, and points to more of the same.
I’m simply not excited by BlackBerry 10, and I bet many customers aren’t either. To be fair, there are customers who prefer RIMs services such as BBM, but the number of loyal customers has dropped significantly in recent years, and while Blackberry 10 might succeed in hanging onto the base, it likely won’t get new customers in the door, nor will it likely draw customers back into RIM’s camp.
Blackberry 10 needed an operating system and platform that would erase years of negative consumer sentiment toward the company, something that would excite people. What they delivered, however, was something on par with what’s out there today in rivals Android, iOS, and Windows Phone, and without a true “wow” factor, RIM will likely find themselves on the outside looking in once more in 2013.
BlackBerry 10 shows promise, but unlikely to draw customers away from other platforms originally appeared on IntoMobile.com on 2012-09-26T13:05:36Z. FV1gMYsz9b5j
Just when I ranted why we don’t see more Padfone-like products, TransPhone appeared. Like Asus’ baby, it too is a combo device, with tablet “part” acting as a shell for the phone. However, it’s rather a mediocre smartphone with specs that won’t impress anyone.
The phone itself comes with a 3.5-inch screen, single-core processor, 512MB of RAM, HSDPA and Wi-Fi connectivity, 5-megapixel rear camera, VGA front-facing one, GPS, Bluetooth and a memory card slot. The tablet shell has a 7-inch screen and a battery of its own (like the Padfone).
Price wise, the TransPhone along with TransPad could be yours for $429.99, which is everything but a deal — as you can buy such phone and tablet separately and still save few bucks.
There are also other options: you can get an additional TransPad for $140, or an additional TransPhone for $379. Family Pack is also available, packing 2 TransPhones and 2 TransPads + 1 extra Charger, for $999.
We can’t really suggest anyone to get the TransPhone. If you do like the concept but don’t want to pay a premium, perhaps you should wait for the price cut of the original Padfone which will undoubtedly follow the Padfone 2 announcement.

Barnes & Noble is out with two new tablets – 7-Inch Nook HD and 9-Inch Nook HD+, both of which are made for the mainstream users and are thus pretty affordable. The 7-inch model is available in 8 and 16 GB variants, costing $200 and $230, respectively. As for the bigger 9-inch Nook HD+, it could be yours for $270 or $300, depending whether you want it with 16 or 32 GB of built-in storage.
The Nook HD’s screen features rather impressive 1440×900 resolution, while the screen of Nook HD+ can display 1920×1280 pixels. Both pack 1GB of RAM and a TI OMAP 4470 processor clocked at 1.3GHz (7-inch model) and 1.5GHz (9-inch Nook HD+). In addition, new Nooks also pack Wi-Fi connectivity support (no 3G), Bluetooth, memory card slot and B&N’s custom UI that sings on top of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
When it comes to availability, pre-orders are starting today with shipping set towards the end of October. Those living in the UK, however, will have to wait for late November…

The four UK mobile networks — including Everything Everywhere, O2, Vodafone and 3 UK — agreed to jointly roll-out direct operator billing to make it easier for subscribers to pay for apps and other online goods. The deal has it that the companies will share a billing platform provided by MACH, which will act as an intermediary, making it easy for developers to enable mobile payments. Consumers on their end benefit from the faster transaction process that doesn’t require the use of credit cards or other payment methods. Finally, merchants get real-time charging, flexible pricing points and direct refund capabilities.
The MACH Direct Billing Gateway includes support for Everything Everywhere, Vodafone and 3′s Payforit Version 4 scheme – and O2′s Charge to Mobile platform. In-app billing capabilities will be introduced on the platform soon.
UPDATE: The story we picked up from MobileBusinessBriefing was inaccurate. This is not a joint operator roll-out and operators are NOT sharing a billing platform.
MACH is not providing a billing platform, but a direct operator billing service, the MACH Direct Billing Gateway. Rather, operators are rolling-out Payforit v4, a regulated UK mobile micropayment scheme, created and supported by all of the UK mobile network operators. MACH is interfacing with the billing platforms of the operators to support this through the MACH Direct Billing Gateway.

Acer will soon launch a new dual SIM Android smartphone. Marked as Z110, it will come with 1GHz MediaTek MT6516 single-core processor, 3.5-inch HVGA screen, 3G data (for one SIM), rear camera of unknown resolution, 256MB of RAM, microSD memory card slot, while Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is running the show. I doubt you’ll get a snappy ICS experience with just 256MB of RAM but then again – I hope Acer knows what it’s doing.
According to Unwire.hk, the Acer Z110 will be available in Hong Kong starting early December, when interested users will be able to get it for 1,000 HKD, which translates into about $128 or 100 EUR. We’ve no information which other countries will get it, as well…
