Samsung Stratosphere 2, LG Spectrum 2 coming soon to Verizon Wireless

We have the rising pile of evidence suggesting that Samsung Stratosphere 2 and LG Spectrum 2 will soon land on Verizon Wireless. LG’s baby in particular has been leaked few times in the past and now we have another shot from the carrier’s Equipment Guide to prove the claim. It is said that the Spectrum 2 will sport Qualcomm’s dual-core Snapdragon S4 SoC, 1GB of RAM, HD screen and an 8-megapixel camera.

As for the successor to the Samsung Stratosphere, it too may come with the Snapdragon S4, as well as 4-inch Super AMOLED screen, LTE connectivity support, side-sliding QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth, GPS and so on.

Unfortunately we still don’t know the exact release date(s) for either of the two phones. I would expect Verizon to announce them in the next few weeks but you never know. We’ll get back to you as soon as we hear something new on this. Stay tuned…

HTC Desire X aka HTC Proto caught in the wild

The rumor is that HTC will announce the HTC Desire X aka Proto at IFA in Berlin. Just before that happens folks of ePrice caught the device in the wild and decided to share the photos with the world. As you can see from the image above, this fella’ sports an edge-to-edge screen making for an awesome look and feel. However, it’s not a high-end device and will rather be catered toward first-time smartphone buyers and/or those unwilling to get into expensive contracts to get the HTC One X or Samsung Galaxy S III. Specs wise, the Desire X comes with a 4-inch WVGA touchscreen, 5-megapixel camera, 1GHz processor and Beats Audio. Not sure we like it that much now, but hey – we’re geeks and we want the best gear money can buy. What about you? Do you like the HTC Proto or would rather pay more and get something better?

Nexus 7 now available from Google Play in France, Germany and Spain

Looks like that September 3rd date was bogus as customers in France, Germany and Spain can now order their Nexus 7 unit from the Google Play store. The 8GB model goes for 199 EUR, while the one sporting 16GB of built-in storage costs 249 EUR. That’s more than what Americans are paying, but I guess we have the higher taxes to “thank” for this. And besides – by now, most Europeans are used to paying more for their gear.

Anyway, it’s nice to see Nexus 7 hitting more markets, however Google needs to up the ante and make its tablet available all around the world as soon as possible. The upcoming announcement of the iPad mini can seriously impact the Nexus 7 demand. That said, the next step for the search giant is to release the Nexus 7 in other European countries and then march to Asia. We’ll see how that goes…

CNN, Time team-up to launch Convention Floor Pass mobile app for the 2012 conventions

Folks looking beyond party-sponsored mobile apps will want to check out the brand new CNN-TIME Convention Floor Pass app to keep up with the latest news from the 2012 political conventions. Available as a free download, the application features 24/7 breaking news updates and alerts, daily analysis and commentary, early access to polls, photos and video from the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. Here’s what you can get:

Simply select a section from the sidebar to dive deep with up to 50 stories from the app’s news feed or go straight to the “Top 5″ news items of the day. In addition, the app will feature a special morning edition of CNN’s Political Gut Check.
    • TIME Cover of the Day – each day of the conventions, TIME will release a cover of the day and corresponding cover story featuring news and analysis from the conventions.

UK: Unlocked Galaxy Nexus drops to 299 GBP

It’s amazing how modern smartphones are getting cheap so quickly. Last year, the Google Nexus was considered the best phone ever and today Brits can get it for 299 GBP (about $473) sans any strings attached.

If this sounds appealing to you — and it really should since we’re talking about one of the first phones to get the latest firmware updates — hop over to this page at Expansys where you’ll get all the details. We can tell you that shipping is free, making for an even sweeter deal.

On the other hand, these days you may want something more powerful, something that rocks a quad-core processor, like the Samsung Galaxy S III or HTC One X. We can’t really blame you for taking that route. ;)

Meshin Calendar: for Evernote helps Evernote prepare for and manage meetings

Company called Meshin launched a free business calendar app for Android and iOS users that sings along Evernote. The new Meshin Calendar: for Evernote uses contextual intelligence and smart prompts to help users better prepare, organize and run successful meetings.

The smart calendar app does its magic by analyzing the meeting agenda, attendees and location to automatically provide prompts for missing logistical information, while suggesting contextually relevant information from Evernote, including notes, files, photos and more.

In addition to the mentioned smart prompts, the application also provides cross-device syncing, note sharing, mapping and the ability to rate meetings. Moreover, users are able to create new notes right from within the app without firing-up Evernote on their phones.

I haven’t tried Meshin Calendar myself but I’m going to do so soon. If you did check it out, don’t hesitate to drop us your two cents in the comments below.

Sony Xperia Acro S hits Russia

Sony Xperia Acro S, which is arguably the company sexiest lookin’ Android smartphone, is finally “leaving” Asia, with Russia being the first country on the Old Continent to get it. However, Sony’s baby is still far from being widely available as only one Russian retailer is offering both white and black versions for 23,990 Rubles, which translates into about $750 or 600 EUR. Yeah, it’s kinda steep, but then again – you can’t buy the Acro S at any other place at the moment.

Again, the Sony Xperia Acro S is a semi-rugged, dust- and water-proof phone that packs a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 4.3-inch 720P HD screen, 12-megapixel camera on the back, front-facing camera, 1GB of RAM, while Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is running the show.

Finally, it’s worth adding that we expect Sony to bring this baby to other countries, including the U.S. in the near future.

Canada: Virgin Mobile unveils the "All in One 40" plan

It’s back to school time and mobile operators all around the world are coming up with cool offers, enticing users to switch boats before the school begins. Virgin Mobile Canada is in that group and as part of its marketing activities, it unveiled a new “All in One 40 Plan.” As you can imagine, this tariff costs $40/month, while including a ton of goodies, such as:

    • 150 Canada-wide minutes
    • Weekends and evenings starting at 5PM
    • Unlimited Canada, U.S. & international texting
    • Voicemail
    • Call display (I thought this comes for free everywhere)
    • 250 MB data or Unlimited BlackBerry Social, whatever works for you best.

According to Virgin, this is a “jam packed” plan with “everything you could ask for.” We would love to see even more data included, but I guess we expect too much for $40 per month… or do we?

Oh look! Another Droid RAZR handset for Verizon. No, it’s not the Droid RAZR HD, but the Droid RAZR M. While no one was asking for this phone, it does add a decent mid-range device to Verizon’s portfolio without sacrificing on the specs.

The Droid RAZR M comes in with a 4.3 inch qHD Super AMOLED Advanced display, along with a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, 8 megapixel camera, 1GB of RAM, 8GB internal storage, microSD card slot, NFC, and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. For whatever reason, Motorola threw in a 3 megapixel front-facing camera onto the RAZR M, which is pretty unusual. That said, our experiences with the cameras on Motorola’s smartphones have been below average, so we’ll have to see if this front-facing shooter is worth the pique in interest. Jetsetters can also look forward to the Droid RAZR M’s global roaming capabilities, ans you can also expect some extra durability with the Gorilla Glass 2 covered screen.

What looks to be the fourth RAZR handset in less than a year, the name is surely being bled dry by Big Red. Of course, using the RAZR name is great for branding, but now the name isn’t limited to high-end devices, it might not remain so flashy as time goes on. Oh well.

With the full details leaking like this, we can only imagine that the RAZR M is bound for launch anytime soon. With an event coming up on September 5th in New York City, Motorola could give us two new RAZR handsets, and not just the anticipated RAZR HD.

    Android-vs-Apple

Flurry Analytics, a research firm has released numbers today that show the incredible rate at which iOS and Android have grown in recent years. In the 1990′s, at the height of the internet boom, the adoption of the web was happening at a wicked fast pace, but recent numbers show that smartphone use, particularly iOS and Android has grown at two times the pace. If you thought the PC boom of the 80′s was fast, Flurry indicates that smartphone adoption is happening ten times as fast.

In the month of July 2012, Flurry is estimating that over 640 million iOS and Android devices were in use.  In China, one of the fastest growing adopters of smartphones in recent years, iOS and Android use has grown over 400% in just one year.

While iOS has a steady hold on the number #2 spot in the country, Flurry and others are reporting that as of Q2 2012 Android currently holds 68.1% of the market. Holding the majority is a big deal when your competitor is trying to destroy you. With the release of the iPhone 5, and the furthering of iPhone support in China, it is very possible that Apple’s worldwide market share, and along with it the growth of iOS across the globe will jump dramatically in the coming years.

It is usually the case that when a new iOS comes out, the great majority upgrade in a short time. But it has been seen that when Android releases a new OS, many of their users don’t upgrade. Android upgrades aren’t always compatible with all their devices at the same time, while iOS is always compatible with the majority of devices on the same night it is released.

iOS and Android are both giants, and their growth shows that. As Apple and Google continue to attempt to out do each other as the most successful and fastest growing mobile operating system,  the numbers will keep heading for the sky.
